Rounding

A "5" rounds up to the next number unless two things are true... A "5" rounds down when

    1. There are no other numbers to its right or the numbers to the right are all zeros
    2. The number to the left of the five is an even number.
Examples

Adding and Subtracting Significant Figures.

The concept to remember is when doing math, the answer is only as good as your worst estimate. Here a YouTube video explaining how to add numbers while following the rules of significant figures.

This video can be found on YouTube at https://youtu.be/SMKup19ym1g

Summary

  • Line up the numbers to be added vertically.
  • Locate the significant figure farthest to the right for each number, this is the estimated measurement.
  • Add and subtract all the numbers without rounding any numbers -ever. Write down this answer.
  • Round the final answer to the place where the estimated number is farthest to the left.

Simplify each expression while following the rules of significant figures.
23.4 + 0.450
34.5 - 2.34 + 8.2
10 + 12
34.67 - 3.45 + 0.99
8.34+ 0.234
132.4 + 12.5 - 61.4
34.0 + 345.0
234 - 90.0 + 12.5
34 - 8.2

14.56 + 102.3 - 4.007
